Jacob Capurro, Joshua Smith and Ricardo Saldivar from the University of Nevada, Reno are organizing the first ever Student Speaker Competition for the Fall Semester of 2013. Five finalists will get the opportunity to speak in front of students and a panel of judges. One winner will be granted a spot to speak at the upcoming TEDxUniversityofNevada2014. The mission of TED is to create “ideas worth spreading,” and the TEDx program was created to give communities, organizations, and individuals the opportunity to create intellectual dialogue at a local level. This competition will give the chance for a student from any major, graduate or undergraduate, to give their talk of an inspiring idea to spread throughout the university and the city of Reno.
Application and video submission began on August 19th and five finalists will be chosen on September 30th. These five finalists will speak at the Student Speaker Competition which will be held on October 9th in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater. One winner will be chosen and notified on October 18th. This winner will be granted a spot to speak at the TEDx University of Nevada on January 24, 2014 in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater.
